Ghanaian Mother and Child Detained at Washington Dulles Airport Despite Valid US Visas

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) — ACLU of Virginia monitoring

Annabella Gyasi, a pregnant Ghanaian woman, and her four-year-old son were held for more than a week in a windowless detention room at Washington Dulles International Airport after arriving on valid US visas. The family had travelled so her son — born with malformed hands — could attend a 30 May appointment at Akron Children's Hospital in Ohio. The pair had previously entered the US in 2024 for medical care but returned to Ghana after being told the child was still too young for surgery. The American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia filed an emergency petition on their behalf. This case has raised significant concerns among Ghanaian diaspora communities and human rights groups regarding the treatment of visa-holding travellers at US ports of entry.
