Police in Cuautla, Morelos, have arrested Francisco Javier N., also known as “El Trompas,” over the alleged killing of 21-year-old Spanish exchange student Claudia Tacoronte. The supplied report says officers located him in the same municipality where the attack occurred.

Tacoronte had arrived in Mexico in mid-August as an exchange student at the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos. She was studying for a semester at the Institute of Educational Sciences on the university’s Cuernavaca campus and had travelled to Cuautla to attend a conference on medicinal plants.

According to the supplied account, the attacker entered the Casa de la Cultura in Cuautla shortly before 9:00 p.m. on Saturday. Tacoronte was near the entrance when she was allegedly approached and stabbed. She died shortly afterward.

Morelos State Attorney General Fernando Blumenkron reportedly confirmed at a press conference that the attacker stole Tacoronte’s cellphone. The supplied report also attributes to the prosecutor a statement that the suspect had a prior record involving residential burglaries.

Federal Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch publicly confirmed the arrest and expressed condolences to Tacoronte’s family and loved ones. His reported statement attributed the detention to a coordinated federal and state investigation launched to identify, locate and arrest the alleged perpetrator.

Sources described by EL PAÍS as close to Cuautla municipal police said the arrest occurred near the market on Insurgentes Street. According to that account, neighbors and shopkeepers recognized the suspect and posted a warning in a community chat group before alerting police. The suspect had reportedly shaved his head and changed clothing.
