SAPS said members dealt a significant blow to suspected drug-dealing activity in Gqeberha during Operation UKUBUZA. Approximately R1.5 million worth of suspected drugs was confiscated in the Central area on Thursday 27 August 2026 at about 11:00.
The operation reportedly followed information about suspects allegedly selling drugs in Parliament Street, Central. SAPS said two men were arrested after being found in possession of suspected drugs. A third man was found with a large amount of cash that he could not satisfactorily account for, and an inquiry was opened regarding the cash.
During the operation, a K9 member reportedly noticed a white Mercedes-Benz B200 Turbo with suspected drugs visible inside. A search of the vehicle and surrounding area allegedly led to a plastic bag of suspected drugs near the rear tyre. The vehicle owner reportedly confirmed he was renting it out and gave permission for a search; a suspect was then reportedly found hiding in the boot.
A key found on that suspect reportedly led members to a flat, where a search resulted in the confiscation of suspected dagga, tik, khat, cocaine, and mandrax tablets, along with smoking pipes, insulin syringes, a portable measuring scale, and an undisclosed amount of cash. Additional suspected drugs and insulin needles were reportedly recovered from the Mercedes-Benz.
SAPS identified the two foreign nationals arrested for possession of drugs as Kelvin Ike, 36, and Okeke Joseph Sunday, 52. Their matter was reportedly remanded in the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court to Monday 31 August 2026. A 42-year-old suspect detained on a charge of dealing in drugs was also expected to appear that day.
The supplied report says Acting NMB District Commissioner Brigadier Loyiso Ngalo commended the operation and said efforts targeting drug dealers and other criminal activity would continue.
