South Africa Reports Extradition of Six Nigerian Nationals in Romance-Fraud Investigation

The South African Government News Agency reported on 11 September that the Hawks and INTERPOL South Africa planned to transfer six Nigerian nationals from Cape Town to U.S. agents. Authorities allege they were linked to a romance-fraud network that targeted more than 100 women in the United States and involved more than R100 million. The six were arrested in South Africa in 2021.

A separate 14 September U.S. Justice Department announcement confirms that five defendants in the New Jersey Black Axe case were extradited on 11 September. The available U.S. announcement names five, not six; it does not resolve the status of the sixth person mentioned in South Africa's announcement. Charges are allegations, not convictions.
